System tray: the indicator and the notifications
The sync service lives in the system tray, through an icon whose look follows the status of your accounts, and through notifications when a decision is yours. Both work with the window closed.
The indicator
The HtkCloudSync icon appears in the top bar as soon as the service runs. It changes with the overall status:
| Icon | Status |
|---|---|
| base icon | “Everything is up to date”, or “No account” |
| icon with sync arrows | “Syncing…” |
| pause icon | “Paused” |
| attention icon | “Attention required”, “Sign-in required”, “Confirmation required”: a decision is waiting for you |
| base icon with a folder emblem | “Choose folders to sync”: a new account is waiting for your selection |
Offline, the base icon carries a disconnected-network emblem. Hovering the icon shows the status in a tooltip.
On Ubuntu, the indicator is shown thanks to the indicator extension shipped with the system, enabled by default. On a GNOME desktop without such an extension, the icon does not appear; the service still runs and the window stays reachable from the activities overview.
The menu
A click on the icon opens a menu:
- the first line, not clickable, repeats the overall status: “No account”, “Everything is up to date”, “Syncing…”, “Paused”, “Offline”, “Confirmation required”, “Choose folders to sync” or “Attention required”;
- Open HtkCloudSync shows the window, or launches it;
- Sync now starts a cycle on all accounts;
- Pause syncing pauses all accounts; when they all are, the entry becomes Resume syncing;
- Quit the service stops syncing. It resumes at the next launch of HtkCloudSync, or at the next login if “Start with the session” is on.
Without a connected account, the sync and pause entries are disabled.
The notifications
When the “Notifications” switch of the Settings is on, the service warns you with a desktop notification in the following cases:
| Notification | When |
|---|---|
| “Conflict: both versions kept” | at every conflict, with the file name and the account |
| “Sign-in required” | when the saved sign-in of an account stops working: “… needs to be reconnected: open HtkCloudSync and sign in again.” |
| “Deletions to confirm” | when a batch of deletions exceeds the threshold: “120 deletions in … are waiting for your confirmation” |
| “Sync is waiting for free space” | when Google Drive or your disk is full |
| “Sync error” | when the service cannot work on an account, with the reason |
| “Account connected” | after an addition: “… now syncs with this computer” |
| “Account reconnected” | after a successful reconnection |
| “A new version is available” | once per new version published on htkapp.com, if “Check for updates” is on |
A notification is sent once per episode: an error repeating at every cycle is only reported when it appears; a new batch of deletions, on the other hand, is reported again. An episode ends when the account returns to a normal status.
Independently of this switch, a failed opening of a Google document link file is always reported by a “Cannot open this link file” notification, because that action often starts from Files, with no window to show the error.
In the window
The window reflects the same status at the bottom of its sidebar: a coloured dot, the label and, for the states waiting for something from you, an icon and a tooltip detailing account by account what there is to do, for instance “Open Accounts to sign in again or see the error.” or “Free up space (cloud or disk): waiting transfers resume on their own.”
Note: the indicator cannot be captured in demo mode; an illustration taken under GNOME will complete this page.
